Kendey Manners

National School Counseling Week, observed from February 3 through February 7, highlights the vital role school counselors play in supporting students' academic, social, and emotional growth. This week is an opportunity to recognize the dedication and impact of school counselors who work tirelessly to guide, advocate, and empower students to reach their full potential. It also serves as a reminder of the importance of providing students with the resources, encouragement, and support they need to navigate their educational journey.

In honor of National School Counseling Week, we are spotlighting several of our school counselors and the invaluable work they do. Kendey Manners, a school counselor at Rogers Elementary School, is one of many dedicated professionals who work tirelessly to create a positive and welcoming school environment where students feel heard, supported, and prepared for success.

What inspired you to pursue a career in school counseling?

I grew up with two educators for parents -- a superintendent and a school counselor. Both were great role models for me, but as it turns out, administration is scary and counseling is my passion! In all seriousness, my mom's impact on the school I attended was very far reaching--even to this day after being retired for several years now. With that example set before me, I wanted to be in a position to make a significant impact on students as well. That's why I decided to pursue a career in school counseling.

How do MCSD’s programs or resources support your efforts to help students thrive?

MCSD has so many partnerships that I've not come across a student need that MCSD cannot provide some kind of assistance with. This helps my students get the help they need so that they can be successful in the classroom.

What makes Marshalltown’s approach to counseling unique?

Marshalltown's approach utilizing Curriculum and Professional Development Leader's is unique--at least to me. It's nice to have a person who can coordinate the professional development I need to stay up-to-date on current resources and techniques.

What do you find most rewarding about serving students and families in MCSD?

It's an honor to serve MCSD students and families. The reward is doing the job.

What’s the most rewarding part of being a counselor?

Watching students' growth. Building a special bond with each student I work with.

What does it mean to you to Embrace The Lead?

To me there are many people in my building and this district who have set a great example on how to lead and teach young people. I simply see their example and embrace it as the way I ought to lead as well.
