LaConner brings extensive experience in special education and bilingual education. He has served as an elementary teacher in a bilingual school and as a special education teacher, with a proven track record of training teachers in restorative practices and inclusionary special education. Most recently, he worked in the Des Moines Public School District as a special education consultant, associate principal, and lead principal at Samuelson Elementary School.
Academically, LaConner holds a BA in Sociocultural Studies from Bethel University, master's degrees in Elementary Education and Special Education from City University of Seattle, and Educational Administration from Northwestern College. He is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Education and Information Communication Technology from the Universität Oberta de Catalunya, with a thesis focusing on using Iowa Department of Education data to support research-based instruction in Special Education.
"I have spent my career supporting students with disabilities in multicultural communities, and I am extremely excited to continue this work in Marshalltown," LaConner said. "The pride that the community has for its schools is evident, and I look forward to being part of the Bobcat team."
LaConner's top goal is to build on the district's existing special education programs and help students with disabilities achieve at high levels both in school and in life. In line with MCSD's "Embrace The Lead" initiative, he plans to cultivate student and staff leaders who can continue to move the district forward.
Outside of his professional life, LaConner enjoys a rich personal life with his wife Kristina and their 15-month-old son Ezra. In his leisure time, he enjoys bike riding, reading, traveling, and baking, demonstrating a well-rounded approach to life that complements his dedication to education.
Please join MCSD in welcoming LaConner to the Bobcat community as the new Director of Special Education.
