National School Counseling Week, observed from February 3 through February 7, highlights the vital role school counselors play in supporting students' academic, social, and emotional growth. This week is an opportunity to recognize the dedication and impact of school counselors who work tirelessly to guide, advocate, and empower students to reach their full potential. It also serves as a reminder of the importance of providing students with the resources, encouragement, and support they need to navigate their educational journey.

In honor of National School Counseling Week, we are spotlighting several of our school counselors and the invaluable work they do. Lydia Arevalo, a school counselor at Marshalltown High School, is one of many dedicated professionals who work tirelessly to create a positive and welcoming school environment where students feel heard, supported, and prepared for success.

What inspired you to pursue a career in school counseling?

I’ve always been drawn to helping people work through challenges and find their way. School counselors play such an important role in supporting students’ emotional, social, and academic growth, and I wanted to be part of that process—helping kids navigate the ups and downs of school life, while encouraging them to reach their full potential. The ability to guide students through personal struggles or provide support when they need it most really resonated with me.

How do MCSD’s programs or resources support your efforts to help students thrive?

The programs and resources within MCSD play a big role in supporting both the academic and emotional well-being of students. For example, our counseling services, mental health resources, and academic support help ensure that every student has the tools they need to succeed. Additionally, having collaboration between staff, teachers, and counselors fosters a strong support network for students.

What makes Marshalltown’s approach to counseling unique?

A unique aspect is the integration of community partnerships. Schools in Marshalltown often work closely with local organizations and mental health professionals, creating a network of resources that students and families can access. This community support is essential in addressing the many factors that affect a student’s well-being.

What do you find most rewarding about serving students and families in MCSD?

The most rewarding part of serving students and families in MCSD is seeing the positive impact of the support provided—whether it’s helping a student overcome personal struggles or watching them grow in confidence, resilience, and academic success. There’s something incredibly fulfilling about being part of a student’s journey, especially when they finally feel like they have the tools and support they need to thrive.

What’s the most rewarding part of being a counselor?

The most rewarding part is the relationships you build. Over time, you get to see students grow, and knowing you were there to support them during pivotal moments in their lives can is really meaningful. It’s also rewarding to know that the work you’re doing has a lasting impact—not just on academic success, but on their overall well-being.

What does it mean to you to Embrace The Lead?

To me, "Embrace The Lead" means taking on a proactive, empowered role in making a positive impact—whether that’s as a counselor, educator, or leader in any capacity. It’s about stepping up, taking initiative, and being willing to guide others through challenges, while also leading by example. It’s not about having all the answers, but about showing up with dedication, empathy, and a willingness to learn alongside those you’re guiding.

In the context of counseling, it means being the steady, supportive presence that students and families can rely on, while helping them take charge of their own journey. It's also about advocating for change, both in individual lives and within the broader community, to create an environment where everyone can thrive.
